Roznik is Dead!

Bear Roznik13.06.2009 Brown Bear "Roznik" is DEAD ! After being missed for two weeks the tragic found in Slovenian Logartal shows us how brutal humans can be. The remains of “Roznik” found in a stream, deadly wounded with a direct shot in the heart, the coat removed professionally by some unknown poacher, the reason? Just pure greed and stupidity!

What makes this incident so tragic is that “Roznik” was part of an Austrian project led by the WWF trying to save the population of the last free living Brown Bears in the Austrian Alps. The fixed radio transmitter including GPS could not save the bear’s life even monitoring the trail made by “Roznik” could not help.

Many questions pass through my thoughts after reading about this sad episode; which state is responsible in protecting our wildlife? In this case an Austrian Bear killed in Slovenian probably by Slovenian poachers; Austrian law? , Slovenian law? Or is the European law responsible in protecting our wildlife? Our political borders are not recognised by animals and wildlife but in a time of freedom of movement there must be some sort of protection.
