Commissioner's Human Rights Comment
20 April 2010, Strasbourg. Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, published a press release on the rights of unaccompanied migrant children. This is the first in a series to be published in the 'Human Rights Comment'.
The Human Rights Comment is essentially a blog kept by Mr Hammarberg, on Human Rights - related matters. In this first article, he criticises the practice of quickly returning migrant children to 'reception centres' in their country of origin. A number of Council of Europe member states have either assumed this practice, or are seriously considering it. This practice, Hammarberg warns, may not be in the best interests of the child, as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child requires.
