EU Commision's concern for the right to one's privacy
4 November 2010. The EU Commission expressed its concern for the challenges facing the effective protection of personal data. These challenges have resulted from rapid technological developments and the devising of ways of protecting personal data having become increasingly elaborated and less easily detectable.
The Commission has identified a number of problematic, challenging issues, including:
- the need to clarify and specify the application of data protection principles to new technologies;
- the need to address the problem of lack of harmonisation betweem Member States' legislation on data protection;
- the need for better enforcement of data protection rules.
The Commission 'resolved to give the highest priority to ensuring respect for the fundamental right to data protection throughout the Union...while at the same time enhancing the internal market dimension and facilitating the free flow of personal data' and laid down its planned approach for modernising the EU legal system for the protection of personal data.
